Disability Rights Promotion International

Co-Directors Marcia Rioux and Bengt Lindqvist lead the Disability Rights Promotion International (DRPI), a collaborative project to establish a comprehensive, sustainable international system to monitor human rights of people with disabilities. Monitoring is an empowering activity because it:

  • provides a voice to marginalized people
  • enhances public awareness by documenting abuses and violations
  • reinforces a collective identity among persons with disabilities
  • supports efforts to achieve social justice

DRPI has three focus areas for monitoring: an individual experiences focus (human rights fact-finding), a systems focus (assessing government law, policy and programs to protect and promote disability rights), and a societal attitudes focus (examining both the coverage and depiction of people with disabilities in the media).
